Shiva & Ganga: A Poem about the Ganges River

Holy_bath_by_JuliZib

Mischievous diva
Plant your tentacles here
Let rivers part their way
And deltas break the earth
Into a thousand rings
Muddy emotions
Resting on the sand
Damp with barren colors
Yet fertile in the sun
Cast your infinite hairline
Into these oceans deep
Quench the thirst
Of salty reefs
Inundate mountains
Soften their peaks
Before they rise
From valleys unseen
And when the sky goes dark
What difference does it make
To moonlit horizons
Where clouds and water meet
There is your home
Where form can take no shape
But love
Where dreams take refuge
From dusk till dawn

The Ganges River is commonly referred to as Ganga in various Hindi dialects. The river enjoys a rich mythological significance. For many Hindus, the Ganges signifies one of the many stories of creation comparable to what is commonly known in the west as the story of Noah’s arc.
